Profile of Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild

Jacob Rothschild was born in April 1936 to the Rothschild family, a family renowned for its global financial and political influence.

The Rothschilds first became well-known in the mid-18th century. At that time, Meyer Rothschild was treasurer of Hesse-Cassel. The wealth that he amassed and passed on to his descendants was so vast that the Rothschilds are considered the richest private family in the history of the modern world. Many members of the family have served in the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It is difficult to gauge the degree of their involvement in the development of international business.

The Rothschild family's wealth remains private and is shared with different parts of the large banking families. The private nature of their wealth makes it difficult to determine the exact size of their fortune, but is estimated to be in the range of $350 billion to $2 trillion.

Jacob Rothschild is probably the most prominent representative of the family. He worked for his family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons before moving on to lead the Rothschild Investment Trust (listed on the London Stock Exchange), including serving as head of the Global Jewish Financial Freemasonry.

Jacob Rothschild's friends and business partners have included Princess Diana, Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and many others. He was also deeply involved in several philanthropic causes and is considered one of the most important patrons of the arts in modern British history.

His achievements in business and philanthropy have been recognized on numerous occasions. He has been awarded medals, including the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (Order of the British Empire), Order of Merit and the Order of St Hadrian.

Built between 1874 and 1885 by Baron Ferdinandde Rothschild, Jacob's granduncle, and considered one of the most famous architectural achievements of its time, Waddesden Manor looks like Renaissance-era castle set in the Loire Valley. It was built specifically to host the Rothschild art collection, which includes some of the finest portraits by Reynolds and Gainsborough.
